Alberta Human Rights Commission

The Alberta Human Rights Act establishes the Alberta Human Rights Commission to carry out functions under the act. The Commission is an independent commission created by the Government of Alberta, which reports to the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. The Commission has a two-fold mandate: to foster equality and to reduce discrimination. It fulfills this mandate through public education and community initiatives, through the resolution and settlement of complaints of discrimination, and through human rights tribunal and court hearings.

Alberta Court of King's Bench

The Court of King's Bench is the Superior Trial Court for the Province, hearing trials in civil and criminal matters and appeals from decisions of the Provincial Court. The Chief Justice and other Justices of the Court of King's Bench are also judges of Surrogate Matters, which has jurisdiction over probate and administration of estate matters. The Court of Appeal hears appeals from the Court of King's Bench, the Provincial Court and administrative tribunals. Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS)

The Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS) offers landlords and tenants an alternative means of resolving serious disputes outside of court. The Service is designed to be faster, more informal and less expensive than the courts. A tenant or a landlord who has concerns related to an eviction, unpaid rent/utilities, security deposit, damages, repairs or other common disagreements can use the service.

Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre (MRJC)

The Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre (MRJC) is a not-for-profit organization devoted to building safer and peaceful communities. They provide mediation services to people and groups in conflict (neightbour disputes, family situations between siblings, parents, children or other family members), and restorative justice services to victims and offenders. These services are offered free of charge to anyone in the greater Edmonton region (Alberta).

Alberta's Three-step Premium Dispute Resolution Process - General Insurance Ombudsman

The General Insurance OmbudService (GIO) is an independent, not-for-profit corporation that has been in operation since 2002 providing dispute resolution services for conflicts between complainants and their insurers in the areas of home, auto and business insurance. GIO’s neutral and professional mediators and experienced Information Officers help complainants and insurance companies work toward a solution that is in the best interests of both parties in a fair, independent and impartial environment. Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Alberta (ADRIA)

The Alberta Dispute Resolution Institute of Alberta is a not for profit organization which provides education and information to its members and the general public on solving disputes more effectively. They provide an annually updated Directory of Arbitrators and Mediators in Alberta.

The National Self-Represented Litigants Project: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of Self-Represented Litigants - Final Report

This qualitative study was led by Dr. Julie Macfarlane of the University of Windsor. The goal was to develop data on the experience of self-represented litigants in three Canadian provinces: Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. The study data illustrates a range of negative consequences experienced by SRL’s as a result of representing themselves. Preliminary Recommendations based on these findings are included at the end of this Report. This 147 page PDF is available for free download.
